Profile, Statistics and Indicators
Neighborhood Description: The Elvehjem Neighborhood is a walkable and bikable community with a mix of ages, housing, and lifestyles. It is centered around the Elvehjem Elementary School, which is within walking distance of all homes and recently built a boundless playground for children of all abilities with the help of a devoted group of parents and volunteers. The school borders the Elvehjem Park and several acres of conservatory forest. The park has a large reservable shelter house and the conservatory is made up of a mature hardwood forest and prairie. Droster Park and Acewood Park further enhance the neighborhood. Acewood Park contains a natural kettle pond and a recent extension of the Capital City Bike Path, connecting Cottage Grove Road to Buckeye Road. Many services are available at the edge of the neighborhood, such as a grocery store, pharmacy, vet clinic, gas station, and restaurants. The Elvehjem Neighborhood is represented by a very active association and dedicated volunteers who work hard to maintain our sense of community. Our mission is to promote and improve our neighborhood community and provide a forum for neighborhood communication and opportunities for social interaction. All 1,700 households receive monthly newsletter, have access to our Website and electronic bulletin board, and can sign up for e-mail notices. We have a large group of volunteers that go door-to-door each spring for our annual membership drive and help with several events throughout the year. Our biggest event is our July 4th Celebration with a bike parade, food, games, and close to 200 attendees. We have also been working on a Business Associates program for businesses in and around the neighborhood. The Elvehjem Neighborhood Association has been active for over 40 years.
Neighborhood Boundaries: Cottage Grove Road on the north, I-90 on the east, East Buckeye Road on the south, Stoughton Road on the west
Neighborhood Statistics Indicators: The Neighborhood Indicators Project is a demonstration of key characteristics and various indicators that relate to the quality of life in Madison at the neighborhood level. Basic neighborhood information as well as housing, public safety, health and family well-being, economic, and transportation indicators by neighborhood is available.
Recent Accomplishments: -Madison Police Department, in conjunction with Elvehjem and East Buckeye neighborhoods, improved school crossing safety during the summer of 2009. At the intersection of Droster & East Buckeye Road a flashing yellow light warning drivers was installed and speed limit lowered (2009).

-The Stoughton Road Revitalization Project Plan was adopted on June 3, 2008. The Plan, prepared by the Cuningham Group, P.A., represents a two year collaborative project joining east side neighborhoods, private sector business interests, local, state, and county units of government. The Plan’s objective is to create a new vision for the Stoughton Road Corridor from Highway 12/18 north to Highway 30. The Plan establishes a clear sense of place, establishes Stoughton Road as a Gateway to the City, promotes a positive business climate, connect neighborhoods, generate design standards, updates land uses and zoning patterns, and generates multi-mode transportation opportunities.

-Received a City of Madison Neighborhood Planning Grant to conduct a neighborhood-wide survey to identify neighborhood issues (2006) and to design and install several neighborhood signs (2002).
