| Profile, Statistics and Indicators |

| Neighborhood Description: | Neighborhood residents find a lot to like about this central city community. Being bordered by water on three sides creates the sense of outdoor living. Some of the strongest friendships have been formed fishing Wingra Creek, hiking Turville Woods or swimming at Bernie's Beach. There is an unusually strong sense of community with long term residents helping newcomers settle in. For example, when a new neighbor broke her leg, residents went out of their way to help with meals, pet care and housekeeping. For families of all religions, St. Mark's serves as a community center for political forums, neighborhood meetings and Bay Creek picnics. |
| Neighborhood Boundaries: | Haywood Drive and Monona Bay on the north, Lake Monona on the east, Wingra Creek (Murphy's Creek) on the south and west |
| Neighborhood Statistics Indicators: | The Neighborhood Indicators Project is a demonstration of key characteristics and various indicators that relate to the quality of life in Madison at the neighborhood level. Basic neighborhood information as well as housing, public safety, health and family well-being, economic, and transportation indicators by neighborhood is available. |
| Recent Accomplishments: | -Wingra Creek Parkway Improvements – Phase 1: This project was for the streambank stabilization and parkway restoration for the Wingra Creek Corridor. Phase 1 was completed in 2007, from Park Street downstream to the stone arch railroad bridge. Invasive plants were removed and natural shoreline stabilization methods were employed. Phase 2 of similar scope from Fish Hatchery Road to Park Street was completed in 2009. -Worked with the City of Madison Planning & Community & Economic Development Department to prepare a 5-10 year neighborhood plan. The South Madison Neighborhood Plan was adopted on January 18, 2005. -Safe Lawns, Clean Lakes project is organized by a group of neighbors who are concerned about the use and effects of lawn chemicals in the Bay Creek neighborhood (2002). -Formed the first neighborhood environmental action EnAct team (formerly EcoTeams) at the June, 2000 neighborhood meeting. -Received Neighborhood Planning Grant for the Banner Project (2003) and for the design/installation of neighborhood banners and signs (1999). -Design NeighborNation Kiosk for neighbors use. Like a physical Kiosk in the neighborhood, this holds neighbors messages about items to share (or for sale), neighborly services (like lawn mowing), or forming groups. . |
